Jewish Montreal of Yesterday

Digital Educational Resource

The Jewish Public Library Archives (JPL-A) launched the a digital educational resource Jewish Montreal of Yesterday in 2010. The site is a platform for free and ready-to-use education materials made up of digitized, original archival materials such as historic photographs, documents and graphic materials. The site is intended for use by mainly school-age children and their teachers but it is also a gateway to the past for academic researchers, genealogists and anyone interested in learning about the history of one of Montreal’s oldest cultural communities.

Materials on the site were developed mainly by the JPL-A. Students from the public history programme at Bishop’s University however also participated in creating a virtual walking tour of Jewish Montreal. Contributions were also provided by Eiran Harris, Archivist Emeritus of the JPL-A, and recipient of the Louis Rosenberg Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Canadian Jewish Studies, Véhicule Press and several artists and academics.

The Jewish Public Library Archives proudly acknowledges the support of the Canadian Council of Archives, Library and Archives Canada and the Department of Canadian Heritage – Broadcasting and Digital Communications.

Today, an archive of the site can be accessed here.
